Common Volunteer Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 28, 2026
Common (“Common,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a campaign platform that volunteers use to support political candidates and campaigns. This policy explains what personal information we collect about you as a volunteer, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.
This policy is about your information — the data you provide when you sign up and the activity you generate while using Common. It does not cover the data of the voters or constituents you may contact while volunteering; that information belongs to the campaign you work with and is governed by the campaign’s own privacy practices.
By signing up for and using Common as a volunteer, you agree to this policy.

Information collected automatically
When you access Common, we automatically log information about you and your device, including operating system name and version, device manufacturer and model, browser type and language, screen resolution, pages viewed, access times, and your actions in the platform. We collect some of this using cookies and similar technologies.
We use error and analytics tools that log IP addresses to identify technical problems and to understand general usage by region.
Location data
If you grant permission, we log your device location during canvassing to confirm you’re near the addresses on your list. These locations are attached to your canvass records. You can turn off location access in your device settings, though some field features may not work as intended.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- create and manage your volunteer account;
- connect you with the campaign(s) you’re supporting and assign you to shifts, events, and outreach;
- track and report your volunteer activity to the campaign;
- communicate with you about your account, assignments, schedule, and training, including technical notices, updates, and security alerts;
- provide support and respond to your questions;
- with your consent, send you news and updates about volunteering opportunities (you can opt out at any time; we may still send account and service messages);
- operate, secure, and improve the platform;
- comply with applicable laws and respond to lawful requests;
- enforce our terms and protect the rights, safety, and property of Common, the campaigns, and others.
3. Who We Share Your Information With
The campaign you volunteer for
The central purpose of Common is to connect volunteers with campaigns. The campaign(s) you sign up to support can see your account information and your volunteer activity — your shifts, attendance, outreach totals, and the data you enter. The campaign’s use of your information is governed by that campaign’s own privacy practices.
Service providers
We share information with vendors who help us run the platform — hosting and infrastructure, analytics, email and SMS delivery, customer support, and similar services. They may use your information only to provide services to us, must follow our instructions, and must protect your data.
Legal and protective disclosures
We may disclose information where we believe it necessary to comply with applicable law, respond to lawful requests and legal process, enforce our agreements, or protect the rights, safety, and property of Common, the campaigns, or others.
Business transfers
If Common is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
4. Communications and Text Messages
If you provide your phone number, the campaign and Common may contact you by call or text about your volunteer assignments, shifts, and updates. Message and data rates may apply. You can opt out of text messages by replying STOP, and opt back in by replying START. Opting out of these messages may limit your ability to receive shift reminders and assignments.
5. Your Choices and Rights
You can:
- Access the information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information, including through your profile settings.
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Opt out of non-essential communications.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under your state’s or country’s privacy laws, including the right to data portability and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. We do not sell personal information.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity, and for your protection we’ll generally act only on requests tied to the email address on your account. We’ll respond within the timeframe required by law (generally 30–45 days).
Note: some of your volunteer activity is also held by the campaign you support. If you want that information changed or deleted from the campaign’s records, you may need to contact the campaign directly.
6. Data Retention
We keep your information for as long as your volunteer account is active and as needed to provide the platform. After that, we retain it only as long as necessary for legitimate business or legal purposes, then delete or anonymize it. You can request deletion of your account at any time.
7. Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data consistent with industry standards.
8. Children’s Privacy
Common is intended for volunteers who are at least 16 years old. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us and we’ll address it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with an updated “Last updated” date, and where required we’ll provide additional notice. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the revised policy.
